Episode 43: The Spelling Bee

Hi All,

We'd like to send out a special thanks to Genevieve of Choo Choo Soul for recording a bumper for us. You can learn more about this hip hop, educational duo over at their Facebook Page. Their songs about numbers, knowing your ABC's, being polite, and believing in yourself will be sure to get you out of your seat. It's important to believe in yourself in order to make things happen. It is easy give up when things get too hard. With a little determination and a lot of practice, you stand the best chance for reaching your goal just like the character in our new story, "The Spelling Bee."

VORACIOUS VOCABULARY
What did you say? A word of the day! In our story
there are many juicy words that are fun to use and say.

determination:the decision or settlement arrived at.
mnemonic:something intended to assist the memory, as a verse or formula.
obscure: not clear or plain.
regiment:to manage or treat in a rigid, uniform manner; subject to strict discipline.

JUST ADD IMAGINATION!
Try these activities to keep your imagination glowing
after hearing the story.

1. Test your own spelling knowledge with an interactive spelling bee. Click here to choose your grade level and begin. 


2. Re-listen to the story and pause it whenever a word from the spelling bee is mentioned. See if you can spell it accurately. Double check your answers by going to http://www.dictionary.com.


3. Try this way of practicing your spelling words. Go to http://www.metaatem.net/words and enter in a spelling word. Will seeing your word displayed this way help you to remember how to spell it?


4. Go to http://www.wordle.net, a word cloud generator, and enter in all of your spelling words. See what different types of patterns you can make.

6. Why did Mrs. Mills tell Eric that he spelled Saint Patrick's Day incorrectly?
